This is a large Tibetan/English text file with one entry per line. It has 65,300 entries and is 4.6 MB of data. It is very extensive, tho certainly lacking in purity (see below). It comes with 2 shareware search engines (sr.exe/sr32.exe and Search32.exe) that do not provide much flexibility and can easily be misused, yielding a corrupted data file. This product definitely would benefit from a better engine. The data file is not encoded in any way, so users can modify it any way they wish (provided they have an editor than can handle 4.6 MB of data!). The following is taken from the readme.txt file that comes with the product:

Please acknowledge that the Concise Dharma Dictionary is a work in progress. There is plenty of room for improvement. You will surely find imperfections, spelling mistakes, missing entries, etc. But because so many people have asked to have a copy, we decided to make an imperfect version available rather than wait another twenty or thirty years. I sincerely apologize to all of you for these shortcomings and ask that you will find it in your hearts to be forbearing and still appreciate the value that this work does have.
I take this opportunity to invite you to be contributors to and participants in a larger project named Database of Tibetan Literature and Culture. This is a project which will take form over the coming years. The database will become public domain and available on the Internet.

There is now an on-line version of this dictionary at NITARTHA INTERNATIONAL. The site currently requires a frames capable browser like Netscape 3.0 or Internet Explorer 3.0. A second on-line version of this dictionary is at Diamond Way Buddhism. Neither of these on-line versions is particularly useful for serious work, as they both lack an adequate interface and suffer from slow servers and the usual internet bandwidth problems.

Erik Schmidt announces the new version of the Tibetan-English Dictionary of Buddhist Culture from Rangjung Yeshe. It is available on CD ROM and includes superfast searching software for Windows 95 by Gerry Wiener. Also included is Jim Valby's own Tibetan-English Dictionary for DOS, Leonardo Gribaudo's database format which displays the dictionary in Tibetan script, and the dictionary in Mac format. This is a useful tool for Tibetan to English translators by helping them automate the translation process. In the Tibetan language the words are not written separately, only the syllables are. One of the main difficulties beginning students have with translating Tibetan texts is figuring out where each word ends and the next word starts, and identifying word compounds that may be found in the dictionary as one single entry. They solve this problem mechanically by seeing how much of a Tibetan phrase can be found in the dictionary as a single entry. This is a very arduous and time consuming process. This utility automates that process by breaking up a sentence/paragraph entered in standard Wylie into the biggest individual words/phrases it can find in multiple databases. Then for each word/phrase found, it displays its stored definitions and relevant information.
